MAKING PLANS FOR ROLL CALL
Annual Red Cross Membership Drive To Open On Armistice Day
Initial steps were taken Wednesday of this week by the Yankton county chapter of the American Red Cross for the annal [sic] roll call, which will start on Armistice Day, November 11, and close on Thanksgiving Day, when C. C. Goodwin, field representative from the St. Louis Red Cross office, met with the executive committee of the chapter.
As was announced recently, the Yankton Chamber of Commerce is helping with the larger gifts for the Red Cross, but the regular roll call membership drive is still to be carried on and will open on November 11.
Representative Goodwin informed the committee that the Yankton county membership quota is 3,000, and the executive committee accepted this quota in the belief that his [sic] year it will be possible to secure that membership as everyone is more than ever willing to assist in carrying on the tremendous additional load the Red Cross has as a result of the world at war and the national defense program. All phases of the organization’s work have been greatly expanded, it was stated.
Chester A. Beaver, superintendent of the Yankton school system, is again roll call chairman and has already spent considerable time in organizing. Nathan Steinbach, clerk of courts of Yankton county, has been named chairman for the county outside of the city of Yankton with Clarence Cowman, county treasurer, and Walter Mueller, register of deeds, as co-workers. Others are expected to be named to assist the chairmen and other groups of workers are being organized at this time.
I purchased roughly 25 original issues of the Yankton (South Dakota) Press & Dakotan, dating from 1938 to 1946. I am systematically going through every issue and will be posting the articles that include the names of individuals. I am happy to email full-size scans of any article.
