street-sign-141396_1280I cannot believe it’s the end of the year already!  I guess it’s time to fess up and see how I did on my goals for 2014:

1. Complete and submit Lesson 7  DONE!

2. Complete and submit Lesson 8  DONE!

3. Complete and submit Lesson 9 DONE!

4. Complete and submit Lesson 10  DONE!

5. Complete and submit Lesson 11 On Appeal

Submitted original assignment 6/24/14; rec’d grade 7/28/14; submitted appeal and resubmitted assignment 7/31/14 – rec’d grade 11/17/14.

6. Complete and submit Lesson 12  Boycotted.

7. Complete and submit Lesson 13 Boycotted.

8. Complete and submit Lesson 14 Boycotted.

9. Complete and submit Lesson 15 Boycotted.

10. Complete and submit Lesson 16 Boycotted.

I finally (after 4 months) received a grade on my Lesson 9 assignment.  I still (5 months now) haven’t received a grade for Lesson 11.  Unfortunately, with all the problems I’ve had with instructions/grading and with the length of time it takes to get my results back, I’m done with the NGS Home Study Course.  Even if I completed the remaining 5 assignments, based on the  length of time it took to grade the last few lessons, my time limit to complete the course would expire before I got my grades.  We’ll just call it a hard $500 lesson.  I certainly hope that their “updated” course fares better for other genealogists than this one did.

In the meantime, I have joined ProGen 24 and am already working on my third assignment.  I love my enthusiastic, motivated group and especially enjoy the feedback I receive on the assignments and in the chats.  Dollar for dollar, the ProGen group has already far exceeded the return on investment from the NGS-HSC.  Considering that the ProGen program only cost a fraction of the home study course, I’d say it’s quite the bargain!

In other news, I’ve accomplished a few things I’m quite proud of this year (warning! horn-tooting alert!):

I guess it’s time to set some goals for 2015.

Motivation Monday: Final 2014 Goal Update — 3 Comments

  1. Sorry to hear you had a bad experience with the NGS Home Study Course. I took it a few years ago and had a lot – a LOT – of issues with the graders. On one assignment the grader didn’t even read the directions and insisted I was wrong in what I submitted. I pointed out the directions and he/she admitted they were not read before grading. I ended up not finishing it either and have never recommended it to anyone to take.

ProGen will be fantastic though. You will learn so much from everyone because each person has a different research background/level of experience, etc. Well worth the time and money.

Hope 2015 is fabulous for you!
