  1. My husband is German Yugoslavian. I have researched back to the mid 1700’s and often find a family where the couple anticipated the marriage and there was no pastor or priest in smaller towns and no money to travel to a bigger area. When the couple did get married the cost for the birth father and now husband to adopt the child or children was astronomical. This could have been his wife all along but not legally for a few years. Hope this helps a little. Elinor

    • Thanks, Elinor! I’ve never thought about that. If the children already carry his surname, do you know if the father still would have had to adopt the children after they were married? (Of course, I have no proof whatsoever of that being the case. Just trying to cover all my bases)
