William Gallagher is my [adopted] 3rd great grandfather. He was born in Ireland around August 1847. He immigrated to the United States at 2 years of age, presumably with his parents (still looking for that proof), Patrick and Mary Gallagher. He lived with his family in Newton Township, Camden, New Jersey, until July 1869 when he married Catherine “Kate” Fields. The couple remained in Camden for the remainder of their lives.
Their first child, William “Billy” Gallagher was born on September 8, 1870. (Billy is so interesting that I had to start a blog just about him). William and Kate would have a total of 10 children, but only 6 would survive past childhood.
William worked in a planing mill for a time, and then took employment as a saloon keeper; an occupation that he passed down to his three surviving sons Frank, Joseph, and Billy, and even to his daughter, Emma – who married a saloon keeper and took over the business after he died.
Catherine died sometime between 1900 and 1910, as I find William on the 1910 census listed as a widower and living with his daughter Emma. I have so far been unable to locate William on the 1920 census, so for now I presume he died prior to that time.
Obviously, there is still plenty of work left to be done on this branch of the tree.Do we share ancestors? Email me: lostancestors AT gmail DOT com
